By way of introduction:

I’m sure the best way to introduce a new comic strip is to simply start putting it out there. On the other hand, I don’t think you all want to wait until I have reached comedic perfection. Who knows how long that will take?

So the plan is to let you in on the process as I learn how to create whatever this is going to be. Right now I have a lot of ideas for the action and the characters. What I need is to learn my way around Blender, the program I have chosen for putting it all together. It will take some time, but I will show my progress along the way. We will see if this old dog can learn new tricks.

Speaking of dogs, I wasn’t planning on making animal characters, but then I had this dream about a chicken. I mean, I’ve never dreamt of chickens before, so it must mean something, I guess. Anyway, it was vivid enough that I woke up thinking I had to use the idea, and, although I did not write it down, I remembered it the next morning. Chicken it is, then, as my first creation. Other characters will follow as I figure out how to use the software.

As I have said, I have a tentative set of principles that I think will make this all function more smoothly, to wit:

  1. Do not preach!
  2. Have fun.
  3. Explore nagging philosophical problems.
  4. Highlight dysfunctions in our society.
  5. Take note of weird but endearing qualities of human beings.

And, of course, I want to find out if I actually have artistic talent (in addition to being wildly funny), but that isn’t so much of a principle as just a “hope and dream” sort of thing. “Gee, Mr. Wizard, what are we going to learn today?” “Well, let’s find out, Jimmy.”

I’m not too worried. Other cartoonists have done quite well despite not being very artistic. Still, it would be nice to be as good as Always Human or Calvin and Hobbes. I’m pretty sure it’s not in the cards. I’ll have fun with it anyway, and I hope you do too.
